You know a place only if you know its food. And you can't know Penang if you have never been to Tek Sen, which is an institution in itself.
Tek Sen has a 45-year old legacy. The iconic eatery had its origins in a humble street side stall called Teik Seng Rice Stall. Over the years the stall built a solid reputation in serving Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka and Peranakan cuisine and recently, Teik Seng moved into the present premises, while retaining its original simplicity.
We had attempted to visit Tek Sen last evening after enjoying the sunset at Bukit Bendera, but by the time we reached the UNESCO heritage precincts of Georgetown, Tek Sen was closing for the day. And since we leave for Singapore tomorrow, we had to, we had to visit Tek Sen today!
We set out from East Indies a bit early, stopping by to enjoy the street life of Georgetown...
And we came across this interesting streetside artist's stall. This guy was making some interesting caricatures of tourists...
Wonder what's here at the Penang Malay Art Gallery? But tonight is a Tek Sen night!
Biryani is big here in Penang...
A streetside barbecue stall - yummy stuff...
Finally at Tek Sen...
There was a long queue of hungry tourists like us and we had to wait a good 30-40 minutes to be seated indoors. This reminded me of Britannia back home in Mumbai...
Articles on Tek Sen...
We got our table and now came the interesting part - scanning the menu!
With our orders placed, it was time to scan the crowd...
Our drink, a cool lemon soda...
Our main course comes in - pork belly with mustard greens, stir fried tofu with vegetables and vegetable soup...
And fried rice...
The food was delicious. Who needs Heaven if you get stuff as Divine as this...
Thoroughly satisfied, it was time to head back...
And we passed by numerous food stalls on our way back...
The hordes at each stall were living proof of Penang unique culinary heritage...
Laksa and Satay - you name it, it's all here...
Every night is a party on the streets here and the food scene very much contributes to Living It Up In Penang!
