After leaving the Notre-Dame Cathedral, we walked towards the Latin Quarter of Paris, to head to Les Invalides. Walking through this quaint district gave another opportunity to come up with some more Parisian Postcards...
A mounted policeman on the Île de la Cité...
Cops in Paris are often called "Poulet" in derogatory sense. That has a traceable and funny origin. During the medieval times, the police headquarters on were burnt down. The new headquarters were built on top of a former poultry market located Île de la Cité. That's how policemen came to be known as chicken. But if you want to get arrested, do call them poulet...
Notre-Dame from the right bank...
There is a creepy legend associated with the area around the Notre-Dame. This legend dates to the 14th century - a barber and a pastry cook became partners in a morbid business. The barber slit the throats of his customers - usually young students from the universities in the Latin Quarter. He then dismembered the bodies, passing them through a trap door where they arrived directly in the pastry cook’s shop. The pastry cook is said to have turned the bodies into meat pies which were apparently quite popular in Paris. It is said that even King Charles VI ate them. After their crimes were discovered, it is said that they were burned alive, and their shops razed...
