Saluting The Martyrs...

Our journey on Taipei's historical trail continues as we head to the National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine in the Zhongshan District.

The main gate of the shrine, with a huge crowd witnessing the change of guard ceremony similar to the one we had witnessed at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall an hour back...

A colourful "ladybird" van...

The shrine is dedicated to the martyrs of the Republic of China and is built on the Chingshan Mountain, overseeing the Keelung River that runs through Taipei city. The shrine was built in 1969, the Martyrs Shrine reflects the architecture of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing's Forbidden City, which we had visited in 2013
The literally "immortalises" about 390,000 persons killed during the various combat engagements of the ROC - Xinhai Revolution, Northern Expedition, Second Sino-Japanese War, Chinese Civil War, and the First and Second Taiwan Strait Crises.

The main shrine right ahead...

The national flag...

Seems like a flashback to May 2013, when we were in Beijing's Forbidden City...

The lions guarding the shrine...

The lions are classic Chinese features that are found all over the orient...

Heading to the shrine...

A mural depicting the Canton uprising of 1911...

The Battle of Shanghai of 1937...

Walking towards the shrine...

And here we are...

Standing guard in respect for fallen compatriots...
