Hiroshima, Here We Come...

After a whirlwind tour of Osaka city, here we were early in the morning at JR Shin Osaka railway station to catch our high-speed Nozomi Shinkansen train on the Tokkaido route to the city of Hiroshima. Many thanks to the two reservation clerks at JR Osaka station who helped us book the tickets yesterday.

We picked up a quick breakfast on the go from the cafe in the waiting lounge before heading to the platform bleary eyed, where we found a train waiting and we got in only to realise in the nick of time that this wasn't our train. Our Nozomi train was to roll into the station in about 10 minutes.

Our train is next...

The distance of nearly 300 kilometres between Shin Osaka and Hiroshima station was covered in about 90 minutes. We traveled southwards along the western coast of Japan's biggest island, Honshu. The ride was really very smooth and we could relax and catch a few winks.

We picked up our one-day Hiroshima travel pass which included unlimited travel on Hiroshima's tramcars and a return ferry trip to Miyajima island, which is an hour's ride away...

With sufficient time on our hands, we decided to head to Miyajima first before returning to the scene of the nuclear holocaust...

A map of Miyajima island...

Passing by the Genbaku Dome - the symbol of Hiroshima, the only building around ground zero that survived the nuclear conflagaration...

And it has been constantly drizzling ever since we got off the train...

We can only pray for some better weather in the hours ahead...
