I Don't Want Nirvana! I Want Great Food, Always! -- Part XVIII - The Revelations Of Miyajima...

The best food is the food that entices you, surprises you and tingles your palate with each bite, each morsel that you savour...
For me, Hiroshima Prefecture's Miyajima was a bit of a revelation, as far as food goes.

Fresh oysters from the Hiroshima Bay being grilled over fire...

The main street of Miyajima island that connect the ferry terminal to the Itsukushima Shrine is dotted with numerous shops selling souvenirs and streetfood. The aromas that waft on to the street are sure to seduce even the most devoted of all pilgrims who head down to Itsukushima to pay their respects to the Gods...

Cracking open the oyster shell...

The fruit of the sea...

It smells deliciously good...

There couldn't be a prettier sight...

Sprinkling lime juice...

Those oysters sure are juicy...

Peering at the condiments as I wait for my oysters be grilled...

And here they are...

Sprinkled with salt, soya sauce and Shichimi - a concoction of pepper and other spices...
And I was really happy I sneaked away from Neeti who was checking out souvenirs next to taste the yummy fruits of the sea...

And more surprises were in store for us as we walked down the street to head to the ferry terminal. Feeling guilty that I had feasted on two oysters while Neeti was shopping, I had to make up for it by treating the lady to a lovely Hiroshima meal! And so we walked into Momobros...

Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is a layered, savoury pancake that comes from the Hiroshima region. The name of the pancake is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "what you like" or "what you want", and yaki meaning "grilled" or "cooked"...

Okonomiyaki containing a variety of ingredients.

The first layer is of pancake batter followed by sliced cabbage, bean sprouts and seasoning...

And on top of it goes some lovely pink streaky pork belly...

And flipping it!

Turning it around cooks the heap of cabbage well...

The "assembly line" at work...

Fresh oysters being grilled...

And there lands a heap of goodness on our table - Okonomiyaki topped with Otafuku sauce - this is good enough to teleport you to "heaven on earth"...

What a way to end our trip to Miyajima! As we headed out for Hiroshima city, I couldn't resist saying "I Don't Want Nirvana! I Want Great Food, Always!"
