The Marvels Of Động Thiên Cung...

After being mesmerised by the emerald green waters of Đầu Gỗ island, we moved on see another incredible natural feature of the island - the Động Thiên Cung...

The Vietnamese flag - gold star emblazoned on a red background reminds me that we are in a communist country, one of the few that remain...

But the vibe in Vietnam is anything but communist...

A map of Đầu Gỗ island...

Climbing up the hill to the mouth of the cave, the Động Thiên Cung...

The view of the quayside below us...

And we enter the Động Thiên Cung...

Động Thiên Cung is huge, it's bigger than the grottoes I have seen so far, including the Yellow Dragon cave at Zhangjiajie. This impressive natural formation has numerous stalactites and stalagmites with special and strange shapes.
For long, locals weren't aware of the existence of these caves. The entrance to the caves were covered by thick vegetation. In 1993, the caves were discovered quite by accident. Following, a storm, fishermen took shelter here and accidentally discovered the cave.
And they named it Thiên Cung of the Heaven Cave, because stalactites inside had the shapes of dragon, phoenix and naturally formed pillars gave it the feel of an imperial or a celestial palace.

Yes, it does feel we have stepped into heaven...

These rocks have been shaped by water seeping through the limestone karsts eroding and weathering the rock as it went down...

The chambers are quite huge and cavernous...

And as we step out of the "Heaven Cave", we are blessed with a lot of sun, indeed visiting Động Thiên Cung did the magic, but it's time to return to Hanoi...
