I have about two hours till my next meeting across the Potomac, in Virginia. And this was perfect time for a quick whirlwind around the memorials with my Uber driver, Joe!
My first stop on this whirlwind was at the National World War II Memorial at the far end of the National Mall...
The monument is dedicated to the Americans who served in the armed forces and as civilians during the Second World War. The monument consists of 56 granite pillars and a pair of small triumphal arches surrounding a plaza and fountain...
The arches depict the theatres of war - the northern arch is inscribed with "Atlantic" and the southern one, "Pacific"...
This is a fairly recent memorial...
The 56 pillars are inscribed with the names of each of the 48 US states as of 1945, as well as the District of Columbia, the Alaska Territory and Territory of Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the US Virgin Islands...
A seal on the floor of the memorial using the Second World War Victory Medal design...
Commemorating the attack at the Pearl Harbour in Hawaii...
The Washington Memorial as viewed from the war memorial...
And the Lincoln Memorial...
Honouring the women heroes of the war...
The stars and the stripes...
And now heading to my next stop, with the very friendly Joe...
