A Washed Out Evening In Nadi...

It appears that the TD04F is washing out my first evening in Fiji with a heavy downpour happening...

The drive from Nadi Airport to our hotel at Denarau island took about 20 minutes and I passed by several establishments owned by Fijian-Indians including this restaurant called Sitar...

The view of the beach from the hotel - well it is indeed a gloomy view...
With nothing much to do in this weather, we headed out to have dinner...

It has to be seafood - a thick grilled yellow fin with vegetables...

And a chicken pita wrap with babaghanoush and hummous...

Checking out store in the resort - and I was surprised to see Fijian-made Indian savoury delicacies called BhikaBhai. BhikajiBhai was set by a Gujarati from Kadod in Surat, Parbhu Bhai Hira. He had mastered the art of making Indian sweets and snacks in Durban, South Africa, in the early 1920’s. Despite the opportunities in Durban, in the late-1920's, Hira decided to invest in Fiji as a land of opportunities. He settled in Ba, selling delicacies through a “bean cart” which grew in popularity amongst the native Fijian and Indian population, and he innovated using all natural Fijian ingredients combined with the traditional processes. And he was joined by his adopted son, or his nephew, Bhikhabhai Parbhu in the early 1930’s who expanded his business and gave it its name. And today they have a outlet chain with shops in Ba, Nadi and Suva. And that's the story of the spirit of Indian enterprise...
